The five major types of libraries are: Public Libraries, Academic/University Libraries, School Libraries, Special Libraries, and Digital Libraries. Each plays a distinct and indispensable role in supporting education, research, professional practice, and community development.Philippine Public Libraries are government-funded institutions that provide free or affordable access to information, education, culture, and lifelong learning resources for all members of the community. They play an essential role in promoting literacy, supporting formal and informal education, preserving local history, and ensuring that every Filipino has access to knowledge regardless of economic status.
A Public Library is a library established and maintained by the national government or local government units (LGUs) to serve the general public. It provides free access to books, digital resources, reference materials, educational programs, and community services. In the Philippines, public libraries are intended to support:
