Mayor Leopoldo N. Bataoil receives climate hero award

Lingayen Mayor Leopoldo N. Bataoil was honored with the Climate Hero Award at the Bagong Teknolohiya sa Nagbabagong Klima para sa Bagong Pilipinas: A Climate Change Technology Summit on September 18, 2024 held at Manila Mariott Hotel in Pasay City.
The award recognizes the mayor’s significant contributions to combating climate change.

One of the purposes of the summit was to further encourage collaboration and inspire collective action within the Filipino community. It, then, celebrated the contributions to the fight against climate change by awarding the Climate Heroes accolade to several distinguished individuals and organizations.

No less than Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin served as the Guest of Honor and Speaker and personally awarded the symbolic trophy to the selected Climate Heroes of the country.

Mayor Bataoil was accompanied by Municipal Administrator Roberto DG Sylim, Municipal Information Officer Mae V. Rueda and Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Officer (MENRO)-Designate Grace Satuito.

Organized by the Climate Change Commission (CCC), the summit highlighted innovative technologies and strategies to combat climate change.

A major highlight was the ceremonial distribution of one million improved cookstoves, designed to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by three million units annually. These stoves will be allocated to marginalized rural communities, significantly lowering greenhouse gas emissions compared to traditional cooking methods.

Furthermore, as the summit continuously strives to foster advancements and solutions, it featured presentations and discussions on various innovations related to compliance, eco-life, and carbon trading. Notably, the summit showcased one of the climate technologies, a climate resilience tool in the Philippine Agricultural Sector, the simplification of climate language for broader understanding, strategic communication on social media, and discussions on the Technology Transition for Net Zero by 2050 among others.

In a significant development, the summit also marked the ceremonial turnover of the Desalination Facility on Zapatos Island, Masbate. This new facility will provide a crucial source of potable water for the island and its surrounding areas.

The summit was conducted in coordination with the Philippine Coconut Authority (PhilCoA), the Philippine Association of Realty Consultants and Specialists (PARCS), the Philippine Association of Realty Appraisers, Inc. (PARA), the Rotary Club of Makati Business District (RC-MBD), the Brotherhood of Brave Maharlikan-TIGERS, Inc. (BBM-TIGERS), and the Climate Change Task Force (CCTF). (MIO)
