Rooted in Resilience: Turning Agricultural Surplus into Sustainable Solutions

The month of May is recognized as Farmers and Fisherfolks Month, a time dedicated to honoring the individuals who nourish every Filipino family and contribute greatly to the country’s food production industry. Behind every meal served on the table is a story of dedication, perseverance, and tradition passed on from one generation to another.
In the fertile barangay of Malimpuec in Lingayen, Pangasinan, a promising agri-business venture rooted in food sustainability and innovation continues to thrive, Busacay Integrated Farm.
According to Ms. Baby Lyn Busacay, owner of the agri-business, Busacay Integrated Farm was established with a mission to address the growing problem of agricultural waste caused by surplus produce, which often leads to spoilage and crop decay.
“Growing up on a farm, I have always had a soft spot for farmers,” Busacay shared. “Seeing crops sold at very low prices while others rot because of overproduction, despite the hard work and long hours farmers spend under the sun, inspired me to find ways to preserve these crops and turn them into quality products that are both affordable and reasonably priced.”
Driven by her passion to help local farmers, Busacay devoted years to exploring agricultural technologies and food processing practices that could transform excess harvests into marketable products instead of waste.
From the farm’s produce came a variety of value-added products such as calamansi juice, chicken flakes, mango jam, and pickled chili, each carefully processed to extend shelf life, reduce waste, and maintain the value and quality of the crops.
“All of our products are naturally made,” Busacay explained. “They are crafted without preservatives because aside from the main objective of the business, we also want to promote healthier food choices while ensuring that our products remain affordable for everyone to enjoy.”
Through years of dedication and innovation, Busacay Integrated Farm eventually grew into a recognized Learning Site for Agriculture (LSA), opening opportunities for fellow farmers and aspiring agri-entrepreneurs to learn modern agricultural technologies, sustainable farming practices, and livelihood opportunities that can improve crop production and income generation.
With the continued support of the Local Government Unit of Lingayen in promoting sustainable food systems and tourism under the leadership of Mayor Josefina V. Castaneda, together with the Sangguniang Bayan led by Vice Mayor Jay Mark Kevin D. Crisostomo, Busacay Integrated Farm, along with other local farmers and agri-business owners, will continue to champion products rooted in food sustainability and innovation, a living testament to the advancement of local food production and agricultural resilience.
