The Softest Slice of Tradition: Simeon’s Puto Senon in Every Lingayenense Celebration

The Philippines is known for its grand and vibrant festival celebrations, from the national level down to the barangay level. Bursting with color, music, and life, and paired with community-driven festivities deeply rooted in tradition, faith, and history, it is no surprise that the Philippines is home to some of the most beautiful festivals in the world.

Aside from these characteristics, Philippine festivals are also known for their delicious delicacies. One of the most popular dishes during these celebrations is dinuguan, often paired with one of the Philippines’ best kakanin: puto.

Along Sto. Nino Street in Lingayen, Pangasinan, another type of puto continues to capture the hearts of Lingayenenses, Simeon’s Puto Senon.

According to Emmy Rozaine M. Estrada, daughter of the owner of Simeon’s Native Cakes, Simeon’s Puto Senon began many years ago with her father’s grandfather. Through generations, the craft and tradition of making this delicacy were carefully handed down to her father’s aunt, and eventually to her father, who now owns and manages the business.

“What inspires us to continue making this delicacy is our great-grandfather’s passion for creating soft, delicious puto that families could enjoy together,” Estrada said. “He wanted to create a delicacy that would stand out, not just flavorful when freshly made, but one that would remain soft and fresh even after it cools down.”
Over the years, Puto Senon became the Estrada family’s signature dish and has been part of many celebrations in Lingayen.

Aside from its delicious taste, Puto Senon also offers health benefits when eaten in moderation. Because it is made from rice, it is a good source of carbohydrates and fiber, which provide an immediate boost of energy for body cells, tissues, and organs. It may also contribute to digestive health and weight management, as it is relatively low in calories, making it a good snack option for people who are on a diet.

With the Local Government Unit of Lingayen’s promotion of sustainable tourism under the administration of Mayor Josefina V. Castaneda, together with the Sangguniang Bayan led by Vice Mayor Jay Mark Kevin Crisostomo, Filipino dishes such as Puto Senon will continue to be part of every celebration not just in Lingayen, but throughout the Philippines.
